Quepos Billfish Cup 2014
February 19th – 22nd 2014
The third annual Quepos Billfish Cup concluded with an applauding success, surprising everyone including its host Marina Pez Vela. 11 boats participated in the event for which 399 Sailfish and 2 Blue Marlin were released. Each day was better than the previous during the entire 3 day event.
Here is a brief glimpse of performances each day.
96 Sailfish and 1 Blue Marlin were released on the first day. “Tranquilo” took an early lead with 15 Sailfish and Marlin to itself and continued with the same stunning performance. Following it was “Front Row” with 600 points lag. “Tijareta”, captained by Bubba Carter and a 4-men team aboard stood third with 1000 points lag from the leader. “Pez Espeda”, a new participant in the event, though not in top 3, impressed the audience with his performance releasing 4 Sailfish and pulling in a 22-pounds Dorado, that helped his 7-years old son take a lead for Junior Angler.
“Tranquilo” with Coffer family and team expanded their lead by releasing 26 Sailfish. “Pez Espada” with his son Alexander released 19 Sailfish and surprised everyone by hitting the second position. At the finish of day, “Tranquilo” was the clear leader with 4628 points, followed by “Pez Espada” with 2921 points. The 3 teams “Pez Espada”, “Tijareta” and “Frenzy” stayed close to one another on the point run.
It commenced with Captain Bubba Carter’s team on “Tijareta” who closed on “Tranquilo”, detrmined to take the lead. For a while it felt the same to all and the battle remained interesting till the end. Meanwhile, the two teams “Pez Espada” and “Frenzy” kept taking leads on one another which was over 10 times during the last 2 hours of game. Finally, the third place was secured by “Pez Espada” with Mom Tracy releasing the first Sailfish, followed by Dad Dustin.
