Coming to Costa Rica on vacation is a memorable trip, but numerous vacation goers experience spending time wasted trying to find other great things to see and do other than solely fishing. Many discover that there is minimally good or reliable information on the Internet to help plan the perfect Costa Rica fishing adventure vacation. While it may be a daunting task just to find accommodations to suit your needs and budget alone, Costa Rica offers a large selection of locations where you can stay. Let’s concentrate on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, one of the number one areas tourists flock to by the thousands every year.
Costa Rica Fishing Vacations – The Destinations
The focus is on several great destinations, each offering its own unique fishing and adventure paradise. From the amazing Los Seunos and Jaco area, about 2 hours west from San José, you can travel south to Quepos/Manuel Antonio, onwards to Dominical, and finally, Uvita. These are just some of the great Costa Rica Pacific coast locations. There are several other great spots hidden along the way as well, off the beaten track.
Los Suenos (The Dreams)/Jaco
Los Suenos is an upscale location with a Marriott hotel and golf course, vacationers travel there to have the “perfect” vacation. With a beautiful marina hosting some of the biggest luxury yachts in Central America, this is a fisherman’s dream. Lots of shops and restaurants in the area are only minutes away from Jaco, which has a reputation for a wild nightlife scene. Los Suenos is a place you need to see to appreciate. Considered a pricier option over other central Pacific destinations, it can cost more to fish here then other marina locations in Costa Rica. There are many luxury villas in the area which have stunning views of the marina and coast line. This area of Costa Rica is not as lush and tropical as destinations further south, but still nice. There is some zip lining and ATV tour activity available in the mountains close by.
Quepos / Manuel Antonio
The Mecca of sport fishing in Costa Rica. The water off the coast of Quepos have some of the richest fishing grounds you will find anywhere on the central Pacific coast. In fact, many boats from Los Suenos fish the Quepos hot spots most days of the year. In addition, Quepos has a new, operational marina that is being developed into a top vessel destination. With more boats in the marina being less expensive to charter, many Los Suenos vacationers take the 40 minute drive to save money fishing with the fleet in Quepos, sometimes saving as much on one charter to fish an extra day. Quepos is a small, funky fishing town with quaint little local shops and a very close knit community.
With one exception, the Best Western Kamuk hotel in downtown Quepos, most Costa Rica vacationers stay in the fabulous town of Manuel Antonio nearby. Considered the number one destination visited in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio has it all! The first thing you will notice is how lush and tropical it feels, truly a jungle atmosphere. The famed Manuel Antonio Park is located here, which has an unbelievable amount of exotic animals to see, such as Two and Three toed Sloths, Deer, Toucans, and hundreds of birds, a bird watchers paradise. Let’s not forget monkeys! Manuel Antonio has monkeys everywhere you go, from your hotel or luxury villa to restaurants, and even at the beach. Look up in the trees, as the monkeys travel daily over the blue ropes installed to help them avoid electric lines. On the short drive from Quepos to Manuel Antonio you will see the magnificent coast lines with large rock islands just offshore. There are many hotels to choose from, ranging from full five star resorts to very small boutique hotels offering you great views of the lush area and coast line. Let’s talk food. You have everything you could possibly want to eat while staying in this area. Great local fare restaurants, and don’t forget the coffee! If fine dining is your forte, there are many excellent fine dining spots to choose from as well.
Adventure, adventure! Quepos and Manuel Antonio have the most exciting adventure trips in the central Pacific area. Zip lining here is really like no other place in Costa Rica, a true rainforest experience. Jungle ATV tours offers you a great way to see the area as well, from the hundreds of acres of palm plantations, to the huge waterfalls surrounding this part of Costa Rica. Ready to get wet? Costa Rica whitewater rafting is in a class by itself. From laid-back tubing trips to full blown class 3-4-5 river sections, there are several rivers to choose from not far from town. Jet Ski tours off the coast of Manuel Antonio Park are fantastic; you will see pods of dolphins and possibly a whale too. Sea turtles are also abundant.
With so much action, it’s hard to get it all in just a week’s stay. Between your Costa Rica fishing trip and your whitewater rafting and zip lining, just to name a few, you may need a little TLC. That’s where the local spas come into play, maybe a romantic couples massage on the beach, or even in your hotel or luxury villa.
Some take at least a day to relax on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Sit back and let the locals serve you a fresh locally caught seafood lunch served on a palm leaf, with a bucket of ice cold beer, right on the beach. With service like that you’ll never want to leave. There are lots of water sports rights on the Manuel Antonio beach as well. Parasailing over the area is not to be missed, or try your luck staying on the banana boat ride, that is always a blast. If you want to surf, no problem, local surf schools can get you up on your first wave, or rent a surfboard for the day.
Quepos night life is a vibrant scene with its little bars and a casino downtown. More laid back is Manuel Antonio which has some great establishments to have fun at night, with lots of live music to dance the night away, sports bars, and great places to see the best sunsets in Costa Rica.
Just a 40 minute beautiful southerly drive down the coast from Quepos is Dominical, a surfer’s Mecca. Lots of surfers come here for the laid back atmosphere and the great waves. It is not as big as the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area, but there are still plenty of things to see and do. There are several nice hotels and restaurants plus some great little shops there. Even if you are just passing through, you should stop and check it out. You can try Dominical fishing charters, where the fishing grounds receive very little pressure and some giant Roosterfish lurk just off the shoreline. With no marina, boating is a little different here, only a few local boats to choose from, and you get picked up on the beach to go out for the day fishing or whale watching. A local waterfall in the mountains, which you can reach by horseback, is truly a sight to see as well.
My favorite spot for an ice cold drink and the best wings I have ever had on the planet is Jolly Roger. I can’t go through Dominical without stopping there, every time. A little secret spot to stay is called – this place is where I go to just unwind. The waves are crashing in close and you feel like you are the only guest, this is my “spot of spots”.
This town is truly a unique spot. Very laid back, but awesome accommodations await you in Uvita. My top pick, by far, is Oxygen Jungle villas, this place rocks! Their saying is, “hard to find, hard to leave”. It is truly a romantic destination, not to be missed. And the food, OMG! Local tours to huge waterfalls and the Marino Ballena National Park are available. Described as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, the park has plenty of beautiful beaches and fantastic vistas. Of the many spectacular beaches found here, Playa Uvita is among the most stunning beaches on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast. Located roughly 16 km south of Dominical, Playa Uvita is situated within the park. This marine park is very popular between the months of December and April due to Humpback Whales migrating here to the warm waters off the coast to mate before returning north. This is an area definitely worth exploring.
